Grandfather Henderson was so smart—a minister, a county official, a school teacher and a singer. I would go with him to preach at Barry County churches because he would let me learn to drive on the way. He sang with the most popular quartet in Barry County. It was the Macedonia Quartet, which went to Nashville in 1926 and made the two very first gospel quartet records for RCA Victor. I have four of those that are treasures, two of which I have donated to the Barry County Museum. The quartet traveled throughout the country singing at events, even at the Hollywood Bowl in California. My Paw-Pa was a wise man who sang and wrote poems and called me Suzie.
